Nederlands Dans Theater II – True To II

With everything comes change, and with every change comes the possibility that what preceded it will be subject to criticism, ridicule, or just plain ole pokin’ fun at.

And that’s exactly what we see in Cacti, created by Alexander Ekman, the current associate choreographer for Nederlands Dance Theater II. Cacti is at the same time engaging, irreverent, and fun. It “rolls its eyes”, you might say, at the silliness we sometimes see in those who have a need, or even whose role it is, to extrapolate meaning from art and to expound on its merits or its short-comings. Ah, critics that we are!

The first of the three works in True To II Nederlands Dans Theater II actually is Shutters Shut, a study of “If I told him: A completed portrait of Picasso” by Gertrude Stein. As short as it is choreographically brilliant.

Then Subject to Change, set to Mahler’s Andante con moto from Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, which is about the tragic nature of death. Skew-whiff, on the other hand, takes us down a completely different path. It’s about humor….and irony….with an energy that all but explodes and one that, at the end, we hate to see…well, end!

True To II choreographers: Paul Lightfoot and Sol León

It’s all so true to II, so delightful, and so completely entertaining. Enjoy, please like, then share it with others.
