Merce Cunningham Dance Company – Second Hand

Second Hand, Merce Cunningham, choreographer; John Cage, composer, “Cheap Imitation”

At the beginning of this excerpt from Second Hand, Robert Swinston and Andrea Weber show us a gentle, comfortable, yet intimate relationship.

In the next part of the excerpt Swinston is left alone on stage, only to be joined by nine other dancers. Cage makes it known that Swinston, dancing as Cunningham himself, was playing Socrates in the last few hours of his death.

A subdued, controlled work… A work of departure. A work of surrender.

Second Hand, Cunningham with a story line…unusual for Cunningham in that movement was always central to his choreography, movement for the sake of movement.

Did you enjoy the spiritual nature of this clip of Second Hand? If so, please like and share with others.

A lovely film documentary for those of you who want to better understand the collaboration and creativity of John Cage and Merce Cunningham… It includes much of their professional lives together as well as excerpts from Cunningham’s works.
