Lester Horton Technique Class – Beginning Advanced

As is typical of many Lester Horton classes, this beginning advanced class begins in a standing position. This is unlike other modern dance techniques many of which start from a seated position.

The Horton technique is a corrective technique as well as one that focuses on building strong bodies in order to prepare the dancer for whatever form of dance he chooses. In watching the exercises you will notice that many of them work on building strength in the back.

Horton’s technique has been codified into the Horton Technique though what we know about it has been mostly relayed by his students since Horton died prematurely without having a chance to fully explain it.

Born in 1906, Horton was influenced by the Native American culture but also had classical training as well as training in traditional Japanese techniques.

If you’re a dancer, do you think the Horton technique is a helpful one for you? If so or if you simply appreciate the Horton technique, please like then share this video.
